Hi from Kevin at FreePrintable.net, where a busy printer is a happy printer.

Gong Xi Fa Cai! That's Chinese for "Happy New Year." Yesterday was the start of the Chinese new year, and to celebrate I chaperoned my daughter's pre-Kindergarten class to the Chinese garden in Portland. It is beautiful there -- I probably would have been able to call it "serene" if it hadn't been filled with preschoolers. The kids started the visit by rolling oranges and throwing coins across the threshold for luck in the new year. We looked at the plants and the Chinese-inspired art, and I vigilantly kept little kids from falling (or jumping or diving) into the koi pond. Finally, we saw a Chinese dragon dance -- no pre-schoolers cried at the sight of three dancing dragons, so that was great. (Yikes, I realized on the way home that I don't have any printables for the Chinese new year. There are ideas for printables everywhere I go. I'll have some for you next year.)

As you know, I'm all about free printables. My friend Bob Rankin knows all about free software, and I like his new free ebook so much that I want to tell you about it. Bob has created an ebook filled with information about free alternatives to the most popular software. Specifically, it covers 30 free programs that can replace Microsoft Word, Photoshop, Norton Antivirus, Quicken, and many other titles. If you use a computer for anything more than web browsing and email, you need this ebook. And did I mention it's free? I highly recommend you download it now. It's got great info that will save you money.

The free ebook is at: AskBobRankin.com

» New Printable Paper
Are you ready for even more printable paper? With my latest addition of 35 new paper styles, there are now more than 900 hundred papers to choose from at PrintablePaper.net. Nine hundred! Woo! (I'm pretty excited.)

I've heard from many quilters who would like specialty graph paper with various numbers of lines per inch, plus index lines, to help in planning their quilting projects. So, I've added 13 such grids. There's also new perspective grid paper as well as new variations and orientations of traditional graph paper.

PrintablePaper.net, which I launched back in 2008, not only has various sizes of graph and lined paper but also: score sheets, budgets, lists, music (staff) paper, columnar pad paper, dot paper, penmanship paper, calligraphy paper, teacher resources, storyboard templates and more.

Everything at PrintablePaper.net has a free PDF version, and some have DOC (Microsoft Word) versions as well. The DOC versions, such as handy printable budgets and some teachers' resources, are just a few dollars apiece. This option is great if you prefer to type into your form or other printable before printing.

» Printable Napkin Rings

I have also added something new to PrintablePlaceCards.net: napkin rings. These colorful designs complement the section of place cards and make for an affordable (free!) addition to any party table as well as business or fundraising events.

There are a dozen napkin rings, including: a Mardi Gras-style party mask, school books, a pink orchid, butterflies, a party hat, a sea shell, damask, paisley, and green leaf. I've included photos on PrintableCards.net so you can see the rings in use. You just print the rings (six to a sheet) cut them out with scissors or a paper trimmer, and tape the ends together. You can adjust the circumference while taping to accommodate any size of napkin.

The napkin rings are all free to print and are in PDF form. The place cards are free as PDFs, or, if you'd like to type in a name before printing rather than write it by hand, opt for the $5 DOC version you can open and edit in Microsoft Word.

I hope you're having a wonderful winter and staying warm. Please take a moment to let me know what you'd like to see next, whether it's additions to existing printables sites, or even all-new sites. Happy printing!

This week, Jack C. wrote to tell me how he's experimenting with different variations at PrintablePlanners.net: "I downloaded and am trying out the 10-year journal to see if it works for me -- just doing January right now. I kind of wish I had already started this a couple of years ago just to see the comparison. Very nifty idea! Trying out some other templates, too (Cornell notes, Month per page, Week per page, Sketch Journal), to try out some things to advance my life." Great, Jack! I'm glad you like all the different styles.
