Hi from Kevin at FreePrintable.net, where a busy printer is a happy printer.

When I was in first grade the standardized tests that the school gave us said I was reading at a 10th grade level (which was as high as the test measured). I loved to read (still do). But the next year, when the teachers started to introduce "phonics" to help us read and sound out words, I didn't understand it at all. I cried in class. I could read anything, but I couldn't understand what they were trying to teach me about how to read. Which just goes to show that a) I'm weird; b) Different kids learn in different ways. One long-popular way teachers help children learn how to read certain words "automatically" is with lists of sight words. I've just added sight word lists to www.TeachersPrintables.net, and also turned the lists into flash cards for www.PrintableFlashCards.net. Also, there are 14 new, full-color place cards to download at www.PrintablePlaceCards.net.

I'm always looking for new tools, forms, and other helpful learning aids to add to www.TeachersPrintables.net. Teachers send me great ideas, as do homeschooling parents and even students. The latest addition is something that has been in practice in some schools since the 1930s: sight words.

I've included 16 lists of sight words in the following categories: High Frequency Words, Dolch Words, and Fry's Sight Words.

It was Edward William Dolch, Ph.D who first came up with lists of 220 common sight words that the educator felt children should know by certain grade levels. His approach was later expanded upon by Edward Fry, Ph.D, who developed lists totaling 1,000 words. In many cases, sight words don't follow typical phonics "rules," yet are seen in high frequency in children's books and other early reading material.

Flash cards have also been created using the sight word lists and placed on www.PrintablesFlashCards.net for free download. They're part of the Early Childhood Education category on the site, which I just launched a few weeks ago.

Like the word lists at TeachersPrintables.net, the flash cards at PrintablesFlashCards.net are free to print, and formatted for cutting along dashed lines and folded along the solid lines. They're easy to read and appropriate for home or school. They make for great summer reading practice for kids.

Planning a party? I've added more than a dozen new place cards to www.PrintablePlaceCards.net, with soft, pastel backgrounds, themed accents, and seasonal designs.

There are fall leaves, butterflies, flowers, a Mardi Gras mask, a party hat, school books, seashells, and other attractive designs to accent your table and let guests know where to be seated.

There are now 39 designs at www.PrintablePlaceCards.net, which I launched in 2009. The site includes place cards for weddings, baby showers, birthdays, holidays, and more. Please let me know if you have ideas for future additions.

There are four place cards to a page (saving on paper or cardstock) and they download instantly. The PDF version is free, and you can write guests' names on them in pen. Or, opt for the premium .DOC download, which is $5 per design. You can open it in Microsoft Word and type names and other information directly onto the card.

Thanks for all your ideas for new printables. Please keep 'em coming. I have more on the way. Happy printing!

This summer, I've heard from several people who are enjoying the family trees from FamilyTreeTemplates.net. Gloria M. wrote: "Thanks Kevin. I've always wanted to make my family tree. Now I don't have an excuse not to. At least it will help me know more about my father's side of the family."
